Hardware is in constant use. It's also constantly exposed — to skin oils, to washing, to friction against other surfaces, to the elements if you're wearing outerwear. And yet most fashion brands treat hardware as an afterthought. A functional necessity. Something to source as cheaply as possible because "nobody looks at the zipper pull."
They're wrong. People don't consciously look at the zipper pull. But they feel it every single time they use it — and they notice, immediately, when it stops feeling right.
Chrome plating vs painted hardware — it's not close.
Chrome plating is an electrochemical process. The garment hardware — typically brass or zinc alloy — is submerged in a chromic acid solution and an electrical current bonds a layer of chromium directly to the metal surface. This isn't a coating sitting on top. It's a molecular bond.
Painted or "imitation chrome" hardware is different entirely. A metallic-look paint or thin lacquer is sprayed or brushed onto the base metal. It sits on the surface as a separate layer — not bonded, just applied. It looks similar to chrome when new. It behaves completely differently after six months of wear.
Chrome plating: Hardness rating of 68-72 HRC. Electrochemically bonded to the base metal. Corrosion resistant. Maintains finish for years.
Painted/coated hardware: No comparable hardness rating — paint is cosmetic, not structural. Sits on top of the metal, not bonded. Chips, peels, and flakes at contact points. Exposes base metal to rust within months.

You can tell the quality before it fails.
Most people find out their hardware is low quality the hard way — when it chips, rusts, or seizes. But there are ways to tell before that happens.
Look at the finish
Genuine chrome plating has a distinct mirror-like reflectivity with a subtle cool, blue-grey undertone. Painted or imitation finishes tend to look slightly warmer and flatter — less like a mirror, more like a shiny surface. Side by side, the difference is visible even to an untrained eye.
Check the contact points
On a garment that's already been worn, look at the highest-friction points — the very edge of a zipper pull, the rim of a button, the corners of a snap closure. This is where painted hardware fails first. If those edges are already showing base metal or discoloration after minimal wear, that's coated hardware, not plated.
Consider the weight
Chrome-plated hardware built on a quality brass or zinc alloy base has a certain heft to it. Cheap hardware is often made from thinner, lighter base metals to cut cost — the plating quality almost doesn't matter if the substrate underneath is flimsy.

This is the other advantage nobody mentions. Because chrome plating is corrosion resistant and highly durable, it requires almost no special care — unlike painted hardware, which needs to be babied to slow down the inevitable chipping.
The only rule: fasten every zipper and button before washing. This prevents the hardware from catching on other garments in the machine, which is the most common cause of chipped plating even on genuine chrome. Turn the garment inside out for extra protection. Dry the hardware area thoroughly after washing. That's the entire care routine — and it's enough to keep chrome hardware looking new for the life of the garment.
